Throughout history Kenpo stylists have traditionally worn white uniforms.
In our Japanese roots this was symbolic of the pure mind of the newborn
student. It was not until 1937 when James Mitose, wanting to distinguish
his style of Kenpo from more traditional Japanese arts, introduced the
black uniform.
Currently we see both traditional white and black
Karate uniforms in our system, along with several
more fanciful styles. Commonly the black uniform is reserved for
instructors who have achieved a level of training
that differentiates them from the beginner student. The black uniform is
also used in recognition of our Chinese heritage.
It wasn’t until the late 60’s and early 70’s
that Mr. Parker adopted the black uniform for himself.
Mr. Parker, when asked by long time student and Kenpo historian,
Joe Rebelo, why he started wearing the black uniform, he
replied with a question of his own. He asked Mr. Rebelo
what was the color of robe that a judge or a priest wears,
or for that matter a police officer? Upon Mr. Rebelo’s
reply Mr. Parker stated “The reason I chose to wear
a dark gi is that an instructor should always be seen
as a symbol of authority and respect.”
Today we take another evolutionary step on the Kenpo
ladder by diverting from the traditional Karate uniform
all together. Many arts in today’s society are immediately
recognized through their individual uniforms. For example,
Tae Kwon Do is known for it’s V-neck top and Kung
Fu is easily recognized by it’s traditional Chinese
uniform. Other styles such as Jujistu and Judo also
have their own gis.
Now, after fifty years, Kenpo is becoming the fastest
growing Martial Arts in the United States and abroad.
In recognition of this Tiger Claw has begun manufacturing
The Ed Parker Jr. Signature Kenpo Uniform, released at the
Long Beach IKC’s in July of 2005.
It is the first of it’s kind and is designed for
Kenpo as it’s own unique uniform. Although many styles
of Kenpo have been established, our roots remain the same
and one stylist has easily recognized another through their
motion. Now it is our hope that we can find unity through our
own uniform as well.
This 14 oz Heavy Weight black uniform made from
100% cotton. Because it is stoned washed it is the
softest heavy weight uniform on the market and guaranteed
not to shrink or wrinkle in the drier.
Some special features include reinforced double-layered
knees, similar to that of a Judo uniform, and an
elastic waistband with a drawstring. Another first
that you will see is an inside breast pocket, perfect to
hold your Kenpo Kards while on the mat. To complete the
ensemble we have included a pants pocket for your convenience.
We have seen many changes over the past couple
of years in Kenpo and this Uniform is one that will
distinguish us from the rest. Step by step we are being
recognized as a leading force in the martial arts and our
efforts to be recognized by established arts has
materialized into something we can all identify with, the
Kenpo Gi.
